Hand-knotted rugs
The traditional way to make an oriental rug. Because each knot is locked around the foundation, the pile cannot pull out, and the rug can be washed, restored and passed down. Oushak, Persian and Kazak rugs are traditionally hand-knotted.
Hand-tufted rugs
Faster to produce and less expensive. The pile is held in place by latex glue and a backing cloth, which wears out over time. A good option for short-term or budget projects.
Machine-made rugs
Often made of polypropylene or polyester and printed or power-loomed to copy handmade designs. Inexpensive but not built to last.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs?
Hand-knotted rugs have every knot tied by hand around the warp threads and last for decades. Hand-tufted rugs are made with a tufting tool and held together with glue and a backing cloth, so they wear out sooner.
Are hand-knotted rugs worth the money?
For rugs you plan to keep, yes. Hand-knotted wool rugs can last decades and be repaired, so their cost per year is often lower than replacing cheaper rugs.
How can I tell if a rug is hand-knotted?
Turn it over. A hand-knotted rug shows its pattern clearly on the back, and the fringe is part of the warp threads rather than sewn on.
Are RUGYFY rugs hand-knotted or hand-tufted?
RUGYFY Oushak rugs are fully hand-knotted, every knot tied by hand, in 100% New Zealand wool.
