How to Tell if an Oushak Rug Is Handmade (and Good Quality)

Many rugs online are labeled "Oushak" but are machine-made copies. Use these simple checks to know what you are buying.

7 ways to tell if an Oushak rug is hand-knotted

  1. Flip it over. On a hand-knotted rug the pattern shows clearly on the back, slightly irregular. A machine-made rug looks perfectly uniform; a tufted rug has a glued cloth backing.
  2. Check the fringe. On a hand-knotted rug the fringe is the end of the warp threads running through the rug — not a strip sewn or glued on.
  3. Look for small irregularities. Slight variations in motifs and color (abrash) are a sign of handwork.
  4. Read the material. A quality Oushak should be wool. Polypropylene or polyester means machine-made.
  5. Feel the weight and density. A good hand-knotted rug feels solid and heavy, not light and flimsy.
  6. Ask about origin and construction. A trustworthy seller tells you where the rug was woven and how.
  7. Compare price. A large wool rug at a very low price is almost never hand-knotted.

Frequently asked questions

How can you tell if an Oushak rug is handmade?

Turn it over: a hand-knotted rug shows the pattern clearly on the back with slight irregularities, and the fringe is part of the warp threads rather than sewn on.

How can you tell if an Oushak rug is authentic?

Check the construction, material and origin. An authentic hand-knotted Oushak is wool, knotted by hand, and the seller can tell you where and how it was woven.

Is a hand-tufted Oushak rug real?

A hand-tufted rug can use an Oushak design, but it is not hand-knotted. It is made faster with a tufting tool and glued backing, and usually does not last as long.
