How to Pronounce Oushak (and What the Name Means)

Oushak is pronounced "OO-shahk" — the first syllable rhymes with "you" and the second with "shock."

Oushak, Ushak or Uşak?

All three spellings mean the same thing. Uşak is the Turkish name of the city in western Turkey where the style began; the Turkish letter "ş" makes a "sh" sound. Oushak and Ushak are English spellings of the same name. In the US, "Oushak" is by far the most common spelling used by rug sellers and designers.

Common mispronunciations

  • "OW-shack" — not quite
  • "oo-SHACK" with stress on the second syllable — close, but the stress usually falls on the first
