Look closer. There is a cat on this rug. And a bird, and a fox, and about a dozen small creatures nobody notices until they have lived with it for a week. This is a pictorial Oushak — a rug that does not hand you everything on day one.

What a Pictorial Rug Actually Is

Most Oushaks are botanical: palmettes, vines, medallions, rosettes. A pictorial rug puts living things into the field. In Anatolian village weaving this was never formal court work — it was the weaver drawing what she saw, in a loose naive hand, without the strict mirror symmetry a workshop carpet demands. That is why no two creatures on this rug are quite the same size, and why the fun of owning one is finding them.

  • Cats, birds, four-legged creatures and folk blossoms scattered across the field
  • Naive, asymmetric drawing — the mark of village weaving, not workshop reproduction
  • Reads as pattern from standing height, as a story from a chair
  • Genuinely a conversation piece, without being a novelty rug

The Palette

A warm terracotta ground with visible abrash, framed in deep pine teal. The creatures and blossoms are worked in periwinkle, wisteria, sage green, dove grey, apricot, marigold and ivory — soft accents against a saturated field, so the rug stays sophisticated rather than tipping into children's decor.

Who This Rug Suits

Buyers who have grown tired of the flat, safe rug and want something with a point of view. It lands naturally in a library, a study, a reading corner, a home office, a maximalist living room, or a nursery that the family intends to keep as a real room afterwards. It layers well over sisal and jute.

Construction

  • Hand-knotted with the Turkish Ghiordes knot, knot by knot on a vertical loom
  • 100% New Zealand wool pile on a cotton foundation
  • Approx. 100 KPSI · low pile · fully reversible
  • No latex backing, no adhesive, integrated warp fringe
  • Woven in the Bhadohi–Mirzapur belt, Uttar Pradesh, India

Sizes

2x3 through 12x18, plus rounds, squares and runners from 2.5x10 to 3x15 — all made to order. On smaller formats the creatures sit closer together and read at a glance; on 10x14 and above they spread out and reveal themselves as you cross the room. Custom dimensions available through the custom rug page.

Care

Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Blot spills, never rub. Rotate 180° once a year. Wool-safe professional wash every 3–5 years. Use a felt-and-rubber pad on hard flooring.

FAQs

Is this a kids' rug?
It works in a child's room, but it was not designed as one. The palette and the wool quality are adult — this is a rug a family keeps when the child grows out of the room.

How many animals are in the field?
It varies by size, since the graph is redrawn for each dimension. Expect roughly a dozen on an 8x10 and noticeably more on the oversized formats.

Do the motifs mean anything?
In village weaving, animal figures traditionally signalled protection, abundance and household luck. There is no single fixed code — each weaving region read them slightly differently.

Will the pattern look cropped on a runner?
No. Runner graphs are drawn as runners, with the creatures arranged down the length rather than a rectangle sliced narrow.
