Handmade Craftsmanship

Tied knot by knot on a vertical loom in the Bhadohi–Mirzapur belt. The wool is carded, spun and dyed against fixed reference cards before a single knot goes down, then washed, stretched and hand-clipped so the pile sits perfectly level.

Where to Put It

Living room: 8x10 keeps the front legs of the sofa on the rug; 9x12 or 10x14 gets all furniture legs on for a grander, more finished room. Dining room: 9x12 or 10x15 so chairs stay on when pulled out. Bedroom: 8x10 under a queen, 9x12 under a king, or a pair of 3x5 accents either side. Hallway and kitchen: the drawing runs beautifully down a 2.5x10, 3x9 or 3x15 runner. Entry: 2x3 or 4x6.

Care

Wool is naturally soil-resistant, so upkeep is light: suction-only vacuuming once a week, immediate blotting of spills with a dry white cloth, and a half-turn of the rug each year so light and footfall wear evenly. Professional wool-safe cleaning every 3–5 years, and always a pad underneath on hard floors.

FAQs

What is the difference between Sultanabad and Ziegler?
Same design family. Ziegler & Co. commissioned rugs in the Sultanabad region of Persia for Western interiors and the trade adopted the firm's name for the look. Sultanabad is the older, truer term.

Is the brown very dark in person?
A deep, warm espresso rather than a black-brown. Hand-dyed wool carries natural abrash, so the field stays alive under lamplight instead of reading flat.

Will this rug shed?
Hand-knotted wool sheds far less than tufted rugs because the pile is knotted, not glued. Light shedding in the first few weeks is normal and settles quickly.

Which size for a standard US living room?
8x10 for front legs on; 9x12 if you want all furniture legs on, which is the more finished arrangement.
