From Wool to Rug: How a Hand-Knotted Rug Is Made in Bhadohi, India
Bhadohi, in Uttar Pradesh, is known as the "carpet city" of India. Hand-knotting has been passed down here for generations, and it is where every RUGYFY rug is made. Here is what happens between an idea and the rug on your floor.
1. Design and the graph
Every rug starts as a design drawn onto a graph — a grid where each square represents a single knot and its color. For a room-size rug, that means hundreds of thousands of squares, and the weavers follow this map knot by knot.
2. Choosing and dyeing the wool
RUGYFY rugs use 100% New Zealand wool, prized for its softness, strength and the way it takes color. The wool is dyed in batches to match the design palette. Small variations between batches create abrash — the gentle color shifts that give hand-knotted rugs their living, painterly look.
3. Setting up the loom
Cotton warp threads are stretched tightly from top to bottom of a vertical loom. These warps become the backbone of the rug — and later, its fringe.
4. Knotting, row by row
Weavers sit side by side at the loom, tying each knot by hand around a pair of warp threads and cutting the yarn. After each row, weft threads are passed through and the row is beaten down firmly with a comb so the rug is dense and strong. A large rug can take months of daily work.
5. Cutting off the loom and washing
Once the last row is tied, the rug is cut from the loom and washed thoroughly. Washing removes loose fibers and dust, softens the wool and brings out the colors.
6. Shearing and finishing
The pile is sheared to an even height, the edges are bound by hand and the fringe is finished. The rug is then stretched and dried so it lies flat.
7. Final check
Each rug is checked for size, color and finish before it is packed and shipped to its new home.
Why it matters to you
Because every knot is tied around the warp threads, the pile is locked in — not glued. That is why a hand-knotted rug can last for decades and be cleaned and repaired. Learn how to tell a real hand-knotted rug.
